Tapachula: Price of Dinner in Chiapas State, Mexico
Dinner for six people was $94USD. We took Madeisy, Michael and their uncle to dinner. This is an expensive restaurant but it was also quiet and without urchins. Madeisy said when they went two days without food in the Darien Gap, she was dreaming of Haitian barbecue.
Madeisy also said that many people disappear in the jungle because they go searching for food and this starts false trails all over the jungle. So when the next one comes they see footsteps in the mud or other markings going in a wrong direction. This makes false trails even more pronounced and group after group meet each other lost.
One can only imagine how many lost and wandering ghosts call Darien home. The number must be in thousands.
Michael said he was most afraid of wild animals but saw very few. This is normal for deep jungle, by the way. They saw a couple snakes and were frightened by unseen Howler monkeys.
Many people imagine deep jungle will be overrun by animals. Confusion seems to arise by seeing books and pictures and videos that show amazing diversity, not realizing diversity and quantity are not same. But in some places such as wide open plains, thousands of animals can be seen in just an hour. Keeping in mind you can see very far in open spaces, while in jungle the animals can sense you first and slip back. We were told there is a monument out there for a Panamanian Senafront (border patrol) who was killed by Jaguar. When we go back to Darien jungle I will ask Senafront.
Today we go to Guatemala border with Mexico.
