Conditions and Indicators of Food Crisis in America

Famines follow patterns. There are two major classes of famine:
1) Sudden
2) Gradual
A sudden famine typically is caused by some specific event or actor. Such as volcanic famines often caused by ash. One day it happens. The season has been perfect. Crops look healthy and bountiful and then BOOM…. It’s over. Survivors move away from the dangerous areas leaving all behind. Their own crops gone, their sudden presence as refugees creates pressures on other regions.
Another class of famine comes gradually and may evolve differently due to various factors such as that some cultures are more resilient than others.
In slow famines, oftentimes conditions worsen but are manageable. Crime increases causing flow of goods to decrease and prices to increase. A vicious, positive reinforcement loop is created. Worsening conditions increase the rate of the rate of increase. Remember your calculus. Second derivative stuff. Fire creates more fire more quickly. If a human enemy has not already stepped in to take advantage, enemies often do so about now.
Example — some condition leads to crime that causes food to stop flowing. Stores and warehouses close. This creates local food deserts. Some primitive cultures respond opportunistically creating worse conditions for everyone. Truck drivers do not want to be dragged from the cab and beaten down like Reginald Denny, so they just stop trucking. The fire spreads. Farmers and warehouses are robbed and so they stop producing and transporting food, fuel, and other vitals. Descent into chaos.
Many civilized cultures respond cooperatively and are more likely to keep death toll to a minimum. More primitive, predatory cultures respond with violence and predation and their troubles are maximize both internally, and also because few people come to help because they do not wish to be raped and murdered. Enemies may see this as a golden opportunity to isolate areas by cutting trains, waterways, roads, and more.
Bottom line: I am amazingly sleepy and so will cut this short.
