Global Smorgasbord: Massive Vulture Population on Migrant Route

Observations from the jungles of the Darien Gap -- Colombia to Panama.
It's 0430 here in DC, nearby the White House. Preparing to talk with about twenty Members of Congress this morning.
Something that struck me in Darien Gap is the massive numbers of vultures. I do not know the reason. Maybe a vulture migration route, or happy hunting grounds. We can assert with confidence nothing would hang around there without lots of chow.
We know thousands of people trekking to United States are dying along the route from Colombia into Panama through the Darien Gap.
To be sure, Panama is home to large populations of Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures -- and a lot of other winged creatures including vampire bats -- but the vultures pop out as a backdrop in the Darien Gap area.
My guess is there has long been a vibrant population of vultures in that meat-filled jungle. But...great invasion route has become a global smorgasbord.
One man, whom I call 22 Days was stuck out there for 22 Days. He told me about the vultures waiting for him to die. 22 Days and his Cuban wife had set off from Ecuador after Biden flung the border open. She left him behind. 22 Days told me he rubbed on his wife's perfume to ward off mosquitoes and he was afraid the black birds above him would take him. The idea of becoming a vulture's breakfast sandwich made him fight harder to survive. He made it and we remain in contact.
If the numbers are correct that about 100,000 people attempted to cross Darien Gap this, and about 10% die, that's 10,000 dead people in Darien.
That's a heck of a lot of migrant meat. If they way, say, average of 110 pounds each -- there are many large men but also many children, that would be 1.1 million pounds of human flesh, sans bones, etc., on the jungle floor this year.
How much carion can a vulture eat? Carion is dead, rotting flesh. I've read vultures can eat about 100 pounds per year -- I don't know the answer -- but I will make an estimate that the migrants who died in Darien if 2021 would sustain fewer than 10,000 vultures.
